Ambushed by a Picnic that had Everyone Waving White Napkins With A Grizzly on the Loose

Dear Scoopers,

So this week I found out my commute home has main character energy I was not prepared for. And the photo proof is on Facebook at Calgary Scoop.

I'm walking home, minding my business, still in my work clothes, smelling faintly of printer toner and regret, when I round a corner and suddenly I'm surrounded by hundreds of people in immaculate all-white outfits.

Tents going up. Tables appearing out of nowhere.

Women on stilts just casually strolling through while mimes mimic an acrobatist contorted 30 feet in the air above them, like that's a normal Thursday activity.

For one deeply confused minute I genuinely thought I had wandered into either a very exclusive wedding or the beginning of a cult recruitment video.

Neither.

Turns out I'd stumbled straight into Diner en Blanc. And at the stroke of 7, hundreds of picnic goers pulled out white napkins that they flailed wildly in the air.

Apparently this thing started in Paris, has spread to cities all over the planet, and Calgary has been doing it for THIRTEEN YEARS without telling me, which feels like an oversight on their part.

The location is a closely guarded secret until just hours before.

It's basically a flash mob, if flash mobs had stemware.

Meanwhile I'm standing there in a wrinkled blazer holding a granola bar wrapper, feeling like the "before" photo in a makeover show.

Anyway. Ten out of ten ambush. Would get unintentionally underdressed again.

Fitz the Grizzly's Great Escape (A Very Brief Memoir)

Dear Calgary Zoo,

We need to talk about Fitz.

One year old. Grizzly bear. Apparently unwilling to accept the terms of his enclosure.

Sunday morning. 7:30 a.m. Ninety minutes before the gates even opened, while most of us are still deciding whether today is a snooze-button day.

Fitz decided today was a "let myself out" day.

He went over the fence around his spot in the Wild Canada section.

Not a short fence.

A fence pushing ten feet tall.

Cleared it.

No thumbs. No ladder. No conveniently placed rock to stand on that anyone's mentioning.

Just vibes and apparently excellent upper body strength.

Nobody seems entirely sure how long he'd been out wandering the grounds before someone noticed.

One extremely ambitious bear and a fence that clearly needs a talking-to.

Very "nothing to see here."

Look, Fitz, I get it.

Ambition is admirable.

But next time, maybe just ask for a day pass like the rest of us.

Downtown Calgary's Quiet Little Secret for Mental Health Recovery

Tucked in at 1035 7th Avenue SW, right in the middle of all that corporate hustle, is a place quietly doing something kind of remarkable.

Elements Calgary Mental Health Centre.

And no, this isn't your standard "sit on a couch and talk about your childhood" setup.

This is paint-your-feelings-instead territory.

Turns out that works too.

Here's the deal.

Two streams.

Option one: an eight-week fine arts program. Actual structure. Actual skill-building. Not just "here's a canvas, good luck."

Option two: a creative arts group. Crafts, social projects, community outings. Looser vibe, same goal.

No pop quizzes.

Nobody expecting you to be the next Picasso.

Just a room where you can show up, pick up a paintbrush, and not be judged for it.

Which, if you've ever dealt with the isolation that tends to show up alongside serious mental health challenges, is a bigger deal than it sounds.

Honestly?

I respect this entire model.

Clients have to be referred to by their doctors. The wait list is long but once there, it hands people a reason to leave the house. A routine. A little hands-on proof that they can still build something.

And it's doing all of this in a neighbourhood that's usually more concerned with quarterly earnings than quiet Tuesday afternoons spent reconnecting with yourself.

Turns out art isn't just something you hang on a wall and admire from a distance.

Sometimes it's the actual tool that gets someone rebuilding.

I'll let you know if I ever work up the nerve to test my own artistic talents.

Though for the sake of Calgary's art scene, let's all hope I stick to writing.

8 Street SW Is Getting a $30 Million Glow-Up

Hellloooo, 8 Street SW,

Brace yourself. You're getting a glow-up. Even if right now drivers are giving you the glower down.

The City is spending about $30 million to turn 1.5 kilometres of you into an actual destination.

New protected bike paths. More trees.

Construction's been chugging along since spring 2025 and wraps up fall 2027, so patience, friends.

The stretch from 2nd to 10th is getting the full treatment right now.

South of that, from 10th to 17th, just some safety touch-ups for the time being.

I, for one, support anything that gets me a nicer patio spot.

Your $20 Just Became $40 for Calgary Kids

School's almost back, backpacks are getting packed, and apparently one very important thing still isn't sorted for a bunch of our kids: lunch.

Yes, that's a real organization name, and no, I will not be making fun of it, because what they're doing is actually great.

This Week's Unusual Adoption: Meet Rigmarole

I did not choose this name. The Calgary Humane Society did.

Rigmarole is a snake. A snake named Rigmarole.

I don't make the rules, I just report the news, and apparently the news this week is that there's a snake out there with a name that means "a lengthy and complicated procedure," which feels like either a very inside joke or a warning label.

The Humane Society is running 50% off exotic adoptions from August 29 through September 6, which means this is prime time to bring home a little guy who will judge you silently forever and never once ask to be walked.

No fetch. No barking at the mail carrier. No 6 a.m. demands for breakfast.

"Yes, I'm here for Rigmarole."

Truly a sentence I never expected to type.
