Good morning, beautiful people of Calgary!

We have a massive amount of news to get through today, like city council settling in for a marathon rezoning hearing and the Stampede preparing to tear down a historic venue. The empty downtown Bay building is also causing quite a stir.

As you probably noticed, we are experimenting with the publishing schedule. Instead of hitting your inbox on Mondays and Thursdays, we are trying a once-a-week Tuesday drop. To be honest, this was a forced decision because I am the only one writing this at the moment. I simply do not have enough hours in the week to produce two full editions. The worst part is I am also struggling to finish the editorial pieces we planned to release.

We went with Tuesday so we could cover most of the week in one go, but you have likely noticed the downside to this setup. Trying to fit everything into a single email means we run out of space, causing your email app to cut off the bottom and give you a "Read more" link to see the rest. It is not the best solution, so let us know your thoughts on it.

The good news is that I am getting some help starting in April. A new team member will be joining us, which means I can complete all the editorial pieces I was working on. We will also return to our regular twice-a-week schedule.

Let’s get to it.

City council is settling in for a very long week. The marathon public hearing on repealing citywide residential rezoning kicked off yesterday. Council heard from dozens of Calgarians, with arguments sounding very similar to the original 2024 debates. Supporters of the repeal argue blanket rezoning hurts neighborhood character, while opponents say rolling it back will limit housing choices and stall development. With roughly 400 speakers registered, councillors are preparing for 12-hour days all week long. Read the recap

The water main repairs hit the halfway mark. Calgarians successfully kept water consumption below the 500-million-litre threshold over the weekend. Infrastructure Services confirmed the Bearspaw South feeder main repairs are past the halfway point. Workers have poured concrete around all nine repair segments. The temporary fixes are scheduled to wrap up by April 9. Get the update

Those vacant Roxboro lots are finally up for sale. Six riverfront lots bought by the province after the 2013 flood are back on the market. Thanks to recent mitigation upgrades, the land is no longer in a high-risk floodway. The empty lots are listed between 1.75 and 3 million dollars. Read the details

The downtown supervised consumption site is shutting down. The provincial government announced the supervised drug consumption site at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre will close on June 30. The province is shifting its strategy toward recovery-oriented care. The funding from the closure will go toward expanding Rapid Access Addiction Medicine services and adding more medical withdrawal management beds at the Renfrew Recovery Centre. The province is also creating a 24-7 downtown outreach team to respond to overdoses. Read the announcement

Stephen Avenue's biggest empty building is on the agenda. The massive six-storey Hudson's Bay building has been sitting empty since last June. Calgarians are anxious about what happens next. Heritage Calgary and the Calgary Downtown Association are hosting a panel discussion about the site's future on March 26, and tickets are entirely sold out. The structure lacks a formal heritage designation, leaving it vulnerable to demolition. Panelists will pitch ideas for repurposing the space, but basic plumbing and electrical upgrades alone could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Read the story

Stampede Park is getting a 20-year makeover and a new rodeo. The Calgary Stampede and CMLC just dropped their 20-year master plan for the grounds. The vision splits the park into seven distinct zones to keep the area busy all year round. It includes tearing down the Big Four Roadhouse for a new multi-purpose building and renovating the grandstand. You do not have to wait decades for new events, though. The Stampede is launching the inaugural First Nations Rodeo & Relay this summer on June 13. Indigenous competitors from North America will compete in eight rodeo events and five heats of relay racing. Tickets are on sale now starting at 30 dollars. See the master plan | Get rodeo details

Siku is getting a new roommate at the zoo. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is welcoming a 20-year-old male polar bear named Yellé. He arrived from Quebec and is sitting in quarantine. Zookeepers will slowly introduce him to 10-year-old resident bear Siku. The meet-and-greet starts with scent exchanges and a protective barrier before they share a habitat. You can expect to see him lounging around the Wild Canada exhibit sometime in April. Read about Yellé

Four and a half million people drove out to Banff last year. The mountains are busier than ever. Banff National Park recorded 4.5 million visitors in the 2025-26 fiscal year. That blows past the previous high set two years ago. Parks Canada notes that about 70 percent of those visitors are regional day-trippers. As Calgary keeps growing, the volume of traffic heading west on the Trans-Canada is only going to get heavier. Read the stats

This is Dolly. She is a two-year-old Great Pyrenees mix. She is a calm and gentle giant who knows how to sit and shake a paw. She takes her treats politely. Dolly recently spent time in a foster home with smaller dogs and older kids. She loves having another dog around the house.

Her thick white coat means you need to be ready for regular brushing sessions. She will do best in a calm home with adults or kids over 12. If you want a thoughtful companion who loves food puzzles, she is your girl. How to adopt: Call the City of Calgary Animal Services at 3-1-1. See her profile

Last week the majority got it right — 34.8% nailed it at $750,000. Another close split: 33.7% guessed $650,000, and 31.5% went with $825,000. Well played.

This week we are going historic. A unit in one of Calgary's oldest apartment buildings just hit the market. Built in 1912. Steps from 17th Ave.
